Minimum Wage Increases:
Well Minimum Wages goes up all across the country...
July 28, 2008
Effectively on July 24, 2008 the federal minimum wage has gone up once more. You will find several links at
the end of this article leading you away from this site, but providing you more detailed information about
federal minimum wage increases and policies.
It has taken some time to make policy changes to the
federal minimum wage laws, but the bill was finally
enacted. The idea for the most recent increases
after an eleven year freeze comes in a three-step
process. The first increase came on July 24 of last
year, raising the minimum wage from $5.15 an hour
to $5.85 an hour.
The next two increases to follow will go into affect on
the same day each following year. The most recent
increase occurred just last week on the 24th. The
new minimum wage is now $6.55 an hour.
Minimum wage laws vary from one state to another, so remember;
a policy in one state may not be the same or applicable in another.
You should take some time out to search and review all of the vairous
circumstances that apply to your specific case.
Things to take into consideration would be: your occupation, whether
you collect tips or not, the differences between state and federal
minimum wages and so much more. For even more details on this
follow the links listed at the end of this article.
There is one more increase scheduled to take place one year from
now. That will be the last one scheduled. How long will it be before
there is another one? We do not know. But we are certainly glad to have these already taking place.

The federal minimum wage for covered nonexempt employees is $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008. The federal minimum wage provisions are contained in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Many states also have minimum wage laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.
